PROJECT PLANNING / 02
How to plan a custom lipid synthesis project
You do not need every answer before you contact a chemist. Make the important unknowns visible.
Explain the experiment in one sentence.
Start with what the material will help you compare, measure or build. Then share the structure you need—or the closest known lipid and the change you want. If a detail is uncertain, write “to discuss” rather than accepting an assumed default.
Separate the essential requirements from preferences. That makes it easier to assess routes and alternatives without losing the purpose of the project.
Estimate research quantity from use.
Include the amount per experiment, planned replicates and any material needed for method development or controls. If those are unknown, tell us the scale of the study and the quantities you have used with related compounds.
For a blend, state whether ratios are molar or by mass. Specify total amount and concentration separately. For several variants, list the amount of each instead of giving only a combined total.
Agree on what “accepted” will mean.
Identity, purity, concentration and positional or isotopic composition answer different questions. Tell us what you need to demonstrate before using the material. The analytical scope should connect each acceptance criterion to a suitable method.
TLC, MS and NMR can be discussed, along with additional chromatography or GC where relevant. GC may address a particular composition question; it is not a universal replacement for intact-lipid identity testing. Do not assume that a method name by itself establishes an assay’s fitness for purpose.
- Identity and structure evidence
- Purity method and required threshold
- Positional, isotopic or free-label concerns
- Concentration assignment and requested records
Plan aliquots and handling together.
Vulcan’s planned presentation uses screw-cap vials. Choose the number of aliquots and amount per vial based on the experiment and anticipated opening frequency. A neat material or a solution may be appropriate depending on the compound; solvent compatibility and concentration need review.
For unsaturated or otherwise sensitive materials, discuss storage and handling for that specific structure. Do not infer a shelf life from another lipid or from unsaturation alone.
Separate your deadline from a delivery promise.
Share the date you would ideally need the material and what drives it. Starting-material availability, synthesis, purification, characterization and packaging all contribute to a project schedule.
Our laboratory is not yet open, but we’re ready to discuss and plan custom lipid projects. Website briefs start a nonbinding feasibility conversation. A future project requires an agreed specification, written quote and confirmed timing.
